This guide outlines adding textbook integrations like VitalSource and RedShelf to your Canvas course. By integrating these tools directly into the course environment, students gain easy access to required readings. We'll explain how to add these tools through modules and the course navigation menu, ensuring a seamless setup.
Adding VitalSource to a Module
Navigate to and Create a New Module:
- Select "Modules" from the left-hand navigation bar in your Canvas course.
- Click the "+ Module" button to create a new module.
- Enter a name for your module in the provided field.
- Click "Add Module" to finalize the creation of your new module.
Add External Tool:
- Click the "+" next to the module you just created.
- Select "External Tool" from the drop-down menu.
- Find and select "VitalSource" from the list.
- Click "Add Item" to include it in the module.
Publish Your Content:
- Ensure you publish both the module and the VitalSource item so students can access the content.
Enabling and Using RedShelf
Access Settings:
- Click “Settings” within your course.
- Select the "Navigation" tab.
Enable RedShelf:
- Scroll to find "RedShelf" in the disabled menu.
- Click the three dots and select "+ Enable."
- Click "Save" to apply changes.
Launch RedShelf:
- Click “RedShelf” in the left-hand navigation panel to launch the eBook.
- Note: RedShelf recommends Safari and Edge; however, use Firefox or Chrome for optimal performance.
