Is your Mac operating system up to date? If not, you could experience issues due to out-of-date security settings or using an OS that is no longer supported, such as secure websites not fully loading, inability to use certain applications, or downloaded software not functioning properly.
To get the most out of your Mac, make sure you are using the most recent operating system and that your operating system is up to date. For a list of Mac operating systems, visit the Apple macOS/Latest version and Compatibility Page.
To check for software updates on macOS, follow the instructions below:
1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner and then select "System Settings".
2. In the window that opens, select “General” in the sidebar, then click "Software Update" on the right. (In earlier versions of macOS, choose Apple menu, System Preferences instead, then Software Update).
3. When Software Update opens, it automatically checks for new software. If new software isn't available for your Mac, Software Update will show that your Mac is up to date.
4. If you do need to perform an update, you will see the name and number of the macOS version you need. Click "Update Now”. Before installation begins, you will be asked to enter your administrator password. This is the password you use to log in to your Mac.
Allow the installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. During installation, your Mac might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times.
5. If you would like set up your Mac to automatically check for, download, and install software updates, click on the "i" icon to the right of "Automatic Updates" on this same screen. From here, you can toggle to adjust automatic update settings on your Mac.
