When updating apps on an iOS or Android device, you can choose to manually update apps or turn on automatic updates. Use the instructions below, based on your device type.

How to Update Apps on an iOS Device


To Manually Update Apps on an iPhone or iPad:

1. Open the App Store.

2. Tap your Profile Icon at the top right of the screen.

3. Scroll down to see pending updates and release notes. Tap Update next to an app to update only that app, or tap Update All.

To Manually Update Apps on a Mac:

1. Open the App Store.

2. In the sidebar, click Updates.

3. Click Update next to an app to update only that app, or click Update All.

To Manually Update Apps on an Apple Watch:

1. Open the App Store and scroll down to the bottom.

2. Tap Account, then tap Updates.

3. Tap Update next to an app to update only that app, or tap Update All.

To Turn on Automatic App Updates on an iPhone or iPad:

1. Open Settings, then tap Apps.

2. Tap App Store.

3. Under the Automatic Downloads section, toggle on App Updates

To Turn on Automatic App Updates on a Mac:

1. Open the App Store.

2. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, open App Store and choose Settings or Preferences.

3. Select Automatic Updates

To Turn on Automatic App Updates on an Apple Watch:

1. Open Settings, then tap App Store.

2. Turn on Automatic Updates. You can also open the Watch app on your iPhone, scroll to the App Store and tap it, then turn on Automatic Updates.

How to Update Apps on an Android Device


To Manually Update Apps on an Android Device:

1. Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.

2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.

3. Tap Manage apps & device.

4. Under "Updates available," tap See details

5. Next to the app you want to update, tap Update. To update all of your apps at the same time, tap Update all.

Note: When some apps get updated, they require new permissions. You may get a notification that asks whether you accept the new permissions. To update an app, you may need to restart your device. If the app has an update available, the "Update" button appears on the app's "Details" page.

To Turn on Automatic Updates for All Apps on an Android Device:

1. Open the Google Play app.

2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.

3. Tap SettingsNetwork PreferencesAuto-update apps.

4. Select an option:

Note: If an account on your device has a sign-in error, apps may not update automatically.

To Turn on Automatic Updates for a Single App on an Android Device:

1. Open the Google Play app.

2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.

3. Tap Manage apps & device > Manage.

4. Find the app you want to update automatically.

5. To open the app's "Details" page, tap the app.

6. On the app's "Details" page, tap More (3 dots).

7. Turn on Enable auto update. When updates are available, the app updates automatically.
