While you were a student at Auburn University, you had access to several applications provided to you by Auburn, including Microsoft 365. As you transition to an Alumni, your Microsoft 365 license will change. This article is a guide for transferring or copying Microsoft 365 files and data to a personal account following graduation.
For the next three semesters (or one year) following your graduation date, you will continue to be viewed as an active student and will maintain access to Microsoft 365 applications. During this three-semester grace period, it is recommended that you take action to save or download Microsoft 365 files and data before you lose your student access.
When the three-semester grace period (one year) ends, your student license will expire, and you will transition to an Alumni license. When this transition occurs, you will only maintain access to your Auburn email through Microsoft 365 and will lose access to all other Microsoft 365 applications. For more information on Alumni email, please review the Email after Graduation or Retirement Knowledge Base article.
If you have downloaded any Microsoft 365 apps to your computer, these apps will continue to work until your grace period has expired. Before the three-semester grace period ends, you will want to move any items in your Microsoft 365 account to a new location, such as a personal Microsoft email account (that is not your Auburn email address). More information on transferring or copying Microsoft 365 files and data to a personal account can be found below:
With Microsoft OneDrive, you can move your files to a personal OneDrive associated with a Microsoft account. Use Mover when you want to transfer several files to your personal OneDrive.
1. Navigate to the Mover Sign In page, and sign in with your personal Microsoft account. If you do not have a personal Microsoft account, visit this page and select Create an account (do not use your Auburn email address when creating your personal account). You'll use this account to sign into Mover and transfer your school files. Note: if your personal account ends in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com, you automatically have a personal Microsoft account.
2. The first time you log in to Mover with your Microsoft account, you will be asked to give permission to access your files. Select Yes to continue.
3. On the next page, select Authorize New Connector under Step 1: Select Source.
4. Select the OneDrive you want to transfer from (your Auburn account). Select Authorize next to the cloud storage you are using for work or school. This allows Mover to access your school files.
5. Sign in with your Auburn Microsoft account.
6. Review and select the files and folders that you want to move.
7. To choose the location that your files will move to, click Authorize New Connector under Step 2: Select destination.
8. On the next page, select Authorize next to the Microsoft account that you want to move your files to.
9. Enter the username and password for your personal Microsoft account.
10. Select an existing folder to move your files to, or select Create Folder if you want a new folder for your files.
11. Under Step 3: Start transferring, select Start copy. Mover transfers a copy of your school files over to your Microsoft account OneDrive.
12. If you want to see more information about the transfer, review the data under Transfer. For example, if you have any Files Skipped, select the number of files in the column and review the files.
