ProctorU: Instructor Guide to Setting Up Record+ and Review+ Exams

Important: Auburn University uses the LTI Wizard (LTI integration) for all ProctorU exams. The ProctorU browser extension should not be used to set up any ProctorU exam. Exams are configured entirely within Canvas. If you don’t see ProctorU in your course menu, you may need to enable it. For help, please follow this knowledge base article on customizing course navigation.

ProctorU is Auburn University’s supported online proctoring service for remote exams. Faculty can use the ProctorU LTI Wizard in Canvas to configure both Record+ (automated launch with professional review after the exam) and Review+ (scheduled session with live proctor verification and post-exam review). No browser extension is required, and the process works with both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes in Canvas. This guide provides instructions for selecting the appropriate service type, setting exam rules, enabling resources or accommodations, and reviewing the proctoring reports generated by ProctorU.

Set Up a ProctorU Exam

Missing Exam Settings

A yellow box indicates that required information is missing from the exam settings; typically, the quiz password, time limit, or exam window.

ProctorU supports both Classic and New Quizzes. The instructions for fixing the settings/resolving the errors vary by quiz type.

Fixing Classic Quiz Settings:

Add Exam Duration (Classic)

In Edit, go down to Options, check the Time Limit option, and enter the amount of time you would like to allot to students for this test. ProctorU-enabled exams require a non-zero value to be set in this field, thus 0 Minutes is not a valid option and will not clear the error.

Add Exam Password (Classic)

Still in Edit, scroll down to where it says Quiz Restrictions and check the "Require an access code" box. Canvas calls passwords "access codes", and ProctorU exams require one to be set. In the box, add the password you would like the test to have. This code must not be shared with the students. ProctorU will automatically enter the access code on the student’s behalf when they properly launch the exam.

Add Exam Window (Classic & New)

Lower on the Edit page, you'll find the Assign section. This is where you can set the exam window. Exam Start/End time (Available from time and Until time) in this window must be set to the nearest 15 minutes (e.g. 9:00, 9:15, 9:30). So set an exam window end time that falls on :00, :15, :30, or :45.

  • If you don't set your windows to the nearest 15 minutes, you'll receive this error:

Once you've fixed everything you can in the Edit page, scroll down and hit Save. Then return to the Canvas tab that has ProctorU open, click reload , and see if the warning has been resolved and replaced by the "Configure Exam to be proctored" button.

Fixing New Quiz Settings:

Add Exam Duration (New)

Click the three dots for more next to your quiz name, then select Build. Go into the Settings tab and toggle on Time limit. Set the time you would like to allot to students for this test. Despite what the "Set to 0 for no time limit" text below would indicate, ProctorU-enabled exams require a non-zero time limit; thus, 0 is not a valid option and will not clear the error. Once you're done making changes here, you can return to the Canvas tab where you have ProctorU open and click the reload button to see this error disappear.

Add Exam Password (New)

Click the three dots for more next to your quiz name, then select Build. Go into the Settings tab and toggle on "Require a student access code". In the box, add the password you would like the test to have. This code must not be shared with the students. ProctorU will automatically enter the access code on the student’s behalf when they properly launch the exam. Once you change anything on this page with the toggles, it will autosave. Once you're done making changes here, you can return to the Canvas tab where you have ProctorU open and click the reload button to see this error disappear.

Once you've fixed everything you can, scroll down and hit Save (if on the Edit page, the Build page autosaves). Then return to the Canvas tab that has ProctorU open, click reload , and see if the warning has been resolved and replaced by the "Configure Exam to be proctored" button.
