Definitions
- Malware is a broad term that refers to any software designed to harm, exploit, or disrupt a device, network, or user. Adware and Spyware are both considered subtypes of malware. Examples of Malware include viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, adware, and spyware.
- Adware (Advertising Software) is a software application in which unwanted advertisements are displayed while the program is running, especially in pop-up windows or banners, and is often installed without the user's knowledge or consent.
- Spyware (Spying Software) is any software that covertly gathers information about a user while he/she navigates the Internet and transmits the information to an individual or company that uses it for marketing or other purposes.
These threats are commonly installed by being bundled with free or pirated software, clicking on malicious ads or pop-ups, opening phishing emails or attachments, or visiting compromised or unsafe websites.
