Is your Mac operating system up to date? If not, you could experience issues due to out-of-date security settings or using an OS that is no longer supported, such as secure websites not fully loading, inability to use certain applications, or downloaded software not functioning properly.

 

To get the most out of your Mac, make sure you are using the most recent operating system and that your operating system is up to date.  For a list of Mac operating systems click here.

 

To check for updates on Mac OS, view the following Instructional Video or following the instructions below:

 

1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner and then click "System Settings".

 

2. Click the “General” option on the left-side of the open window and then click "Software Update" to the right.

 

3. Your current OS version will be shown on this screen. If your OS is up to date, you will not have the option to update.  

 

4. If you do need to perform an update, you will see the name and number of the macOS version you need. Click "Update Now”. The update will need to download in order to be installed.  Once this has completed, you will see a screen where you will be asked to finish downloading the update and then restart your computer.  

 

5. If you would like set up your Mac to automatically check for, download, and install software updates, click on the "i" icon to the right of "Automatic updates" on this same screen. From here, you can toggle to adjust automatic update settings on your Mac.

 

An alternate way to check for updates on Mac OS is by selecting the "About This Mac" option:

 

1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner and then click "About This Mac". 

 

2. About this Mac will show the current macOS version name and version number. By clicking "More Info...", this will bring up the same System Settings screen as shown in the instructions above where you can view any software updates.
