What is a MAC address?

A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique identifier assigned to every active network device that has a Network Interface Card (NIC). A MAC address is 12 characters long, consisting of digits (0-9) and letters (A-F) and is usually found in a device's settings. All devices that can connect to the internet will have a MAC address; therefore, it is a vital piece of information for troubleshooting network issues. 

Some examples of MAC address formats are shown below:

For improved privacy, devices will have a permanent, unique MAC address that differs from the MAC address for each connected WiFi network.

How do I find the MAC address on a Windows PC?


1. In the search bar on a Windows computer, type CMD or Command Prompt. Next, click on the Command Prompt application. (An alternative shortcut is to press the Windows key + R, type CMD, and hit enter.)

2. Once you click on that application, it will bring up a black Command Prompt screen with a flashing cursor. Type ipconfig /all and hit Enter.

3. The wired MAC address will be listed under Ethernet adapter Ethernet next to Physical Address. The wireless MAC address will be listed under Wireless LAN adapter WiFi next to Physical Address

How do I find the MAC address on a Mac Computer?


1. On a MAC computer, select Apple menu > System Settings > Network.

2. Select the specific network connection you are using (i.e. eduroam), and select Details next to that network.

3. Select the Hardware tab, and you will see the device's permanent MAC address.

4. To find the WiFi MAC address associated with the current wireless network that is connected, select the specific network connection you are using (i.e. eduroam), and you will see the WiFi address.

How do I find the MAC address on an iOS Device?


1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap General.

3. Tap About.

4. The WiFi address listed is your permanent device MAC address.

5. If you need to identify the current network MAC address, go to Settings > WiFi > tap "i" next to your connected wireless network (i.e. eduroam) > WiFi Address.

How do I find the MAC address on an Android Device?


Note: the instructions may vary depending on the Android version and phone mode. Check your phone manufacturer's website for support information.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap About Phone or About Device. This option might be under System on some devices.

3. Tap on Status or Hardware Information and locate your permanent device WiFi MAC address.

4. If you need to identify the current network MAC address, go to Settings Connections > WiFi > tap the Settings Gear icon next to your connected wireless network (i.e. eduroam). You may need to click "View More" to expand the details of the connection, then scroll to view your randomized MAC address.
