May Duo Updates: New Authentication Experience, Mobile Passcode Security Update, & Microsoft 365 MFA

There are important updates scheduled for Duo authentication that will be implemented May 2024. These changes will enhance the security and usability of our authentication systems.

The three key updates are:

1. New Authentication Experience: Transitioning from Duo iframe to Duo Universal Prompt

2. Duo Mobile Passcode Security Update

3. Securing Microsoft 365 (M365) Applications

New Authentication Experience: Duo Universal Prompt

A new prompt screen will replace the currently displayed Duo prompt on May 13, 2024. This change has been mandated by Duo and will provide a more robust authentication experience.

Below is a side-by-side comparison of the current Duo Prompt vs. the Duo Universal Prompt. The prompt is received after a user chooses an authentication method (Duo push, text message passcode, phone call, or Duo token/Yubikey). Users will see a visual change when we transition to the Universal Prompt on May 13, but all functionality will remain the same.

Duo Mobile Passcode Security Update

Duo will be releasing a security update on May 16, 2024, to enhance the Mobile Passcode feature that is available in the Duo Mobile app. With this update, it is critical to ensure that your Duo app is updated to the most current version to benefit from these security enhancements. The minimum requirements for the Duo Mobile app are iOS 15 or Android 11, and the Duo Mobile app should be version 4.49 or later. For instructions on updating your app to the most current version available, see the Knowledge Base article How to Update Apps on iOS and Android Devices.

More information about the Duo Mobile Passcode authentication method, as well as information on alternative methods for completing Duo 2-factor authentication, can be reviewed by visiting our Knowledge Base article Duo: Methods of Using Duo on an iPhone, Android, Cellular Phone, or Landline.

Securing Microsoft 365 (M365) Applications

Effective May 13, 2024, Duo will be required for accessing M365 apps (Outlook, Excel, OneDrive, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.) both on-campus and off-campus. To reduce the number of Duo authentication push requests, we are expanding the 'remember me for 7 days' function to remember you for up to 30 days when accessing M365 apps.
