This guide explains how to configure secure access to Qualtrics surveys at Auburn University using Single Sign-On (SSO) and how to embed metadata to automatically collect user information. With SSO enabled, only authorized users—such as students, faculty, or staff—can access the survey, and they will be prompted to log in using their Auburn credentials. Embedding metadata fields allows you to capture details like name, email, or role without requiring respondents to enter them manually, streamlining the process and improving data accuracy.

Access Survey Flow

• Log in to your Qualtrics account
• Open the survey where you want to configure SSO
• Click on the Survey Flow icon from the survey menu

Add an Authenticator Element

• In the survey, click Add a New Element Here
• Select Authenticator from the list of elements
• Set the Authentication Type to SSO

Configure SSO Settings

• Select The SSO Type as Shibboleth
• Choose the connection as SAML
• Enable Capture respondent identifying info by checking the box
• Add Embedded Data fields to capture metadata 
  • Click the green plus sign(+) to add a new field

• Click Apply once all fields are added 

Position the Authenticator Block

• Ensure the Authenticator block is placed above any question blocks at the top of your Survey Flow.
• Use the Move option to drag into position.

Use Metadata in Survey Question

To display captured metadata dynamically within survey questions:

• Use Piped Text to insert embedded data fields into questions or messages
•  Example:
• • Email: ${e://Field/Email}
  • Preferred Name: ${e://Field/First%20Name}
  • Last Name: ${e://Field/Last%20Name}
  • Gid: ${e://Field/Gid}
  • CC: ${e://Field/cc}
  • Curriculum: ${e://Field/curr}

Save and Publish

• Save your Survey flow changes by clicking Save Flow
• Publish your survey to activate SSO authentication and metadata embedding

By following these steps, you can successfully set up SSO authentication in Qualtrics and dynamically pull metadata for personalized surveys and advanced analysis.
