How to Install and Update the Google Chrome Browser


Google Chrome is a widely used web browser that is recommended for accessing most web-based Auburn University resources. For optimal performance and security, it is recommended to use the latest version of Google Chrome. Use the following steps to install Google Chrome and update Google Chrome to the latest version, based on device type. 

How to Install Google Chrome

On a Windows Device:
  1. On your computer, download the Google Chrome installation file at google.com/chrome.
  2. To install the file, follow the on-screen instructions. If you get the message, "Do you want to run this file?," select Run. If you get the message, "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?," select Yes.
  3. Open Chrome. Windows 10 and up: After the installation is completed, a Chrome window opens. To make Chrome your default browser, visit this Google Chrome Help Page.
On a Mac Device:
  1. To use Chrome on Mac, you need macOS 12 Monterey and up.
  2. On your computer, download the Google Chrome installation file at google.com/chrome.
  3. Open the file named "googlechrome.dmg." In the window that opens, you can find Chrome.
  4. Drag Chrome to the Applications folder. You may have to enter the admin password for your Mac. If you do not know the admin password, drag Chrome to a place on your computer where you can make edits, like your desktop.
  5. To clean up after the install, in the Finder's sidebar, to the right of Chrome, select Eject.

On an iPhone or iPad Device:
  1. On your iPhone or iPad device, open the App Store. You can use Chrome with iOS 17 and up.
  2. In the search bar, enter Chrome.
  3. Tap Get. To install, follow the on-screen instructions. If prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
  4. To start browsing, tap Open. To open Chrome from your Home screen, tap Chrome.

On an Android Device:
  1. On your Android device, open the Google Play Store app. You can use Chrome on phones or tablets with Android 10 and up.
  2. In the search bar, enter Chrome.
  3. Tap Install.
  4. To start browsing, tap Open. You can find Chrome on your Home screen or in "All Apps." To open, tap Chrome.

How to Update Google Chrome

On a Windows Device:
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More (three vertical dots) > Scroll to Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Select Relaunch. If you cannot find the "Relaunch" option, you are running the latest version.
  4. The browser saves your opened tabs and windows and relaunches them automatically when it restarts; however, any incognito windows will not reopen when Chrome restarts. If you do not want to restart right away, select Not now. The update applies the next time you restart Chrome.
On a Mac Device:
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More (three vertical dots) > Scroll to Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Select Relaunch. If you cannot find the "Relaunch" option, you are running the latest version.

  3. Scroll down to "Available Updates," and search for Chrome.
  4. If Chrome is listed, to install, tap Update.
  5. If prompted, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.
On an Android Device:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Play Store app.
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Manage apps & device.
  4. Under "Updates available," find Chrome.
  5. Next to Chrome, tap Update.
