Duo is implementing a security update that affects older versions of the Duo Mobile app and other software that uses Duo for multi-factor authentication (MFA). To maintain access to systems that require Duo authentication, any affected Duo apps must be updated by March 31st. Those who do not update by this date may experience login issues.
For most students, faculty, and staff, no action is required if mobile apps update automatically. However, individuals with older devices, disabled auto-updates, or certain applications may need to update Duo Mobile or related software manually. The minimum version required for the Duo Mobile app to continue to function properly is 4.85.0 or later.
1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your device. Click the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner of the app.
2. The Duo Mobile app version will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. In our example screenshot below, the Duo app is version 4.107.0.1527.1. Because that version is higher than 4.85.0, the app does not need updating, and no changes are needed. The app will continue to receive Duo pushes after March 31 as usual.
If you are using a Duo app version older than 4.85.0, update your app in your device's App Store. From your device, visit the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android), search for Duo Mobile, and tap Update.
Additional guidance for updating apps (manually or automatically) is found in the OIT Knowledge Base article at aub.ie/updateapps.
The Office of Information Technology strongly encourages everyone to review how to update apps on their devices and ensure updates are enabled. Keeping apps up to date helps protect personal and University data and ensures uninterrupted access to Auburn systems.

No; if you authenticate by receiving a Duo SMS text code, a phone call, or use a Duo token, you will not notice any changes. This update applies only to the Duo Mobile app that sends authentication push notifications.
Duo works with all cell phones and landlines by supporting authentication via phone call and SMS text codes. A SMS-delivered code and phone callback authentication do not rely on the Duo Mobile app. Duo will continue to support these types of authentication for older devices with or without the app.
Additional information regarding methods of using Duo can be found in the Knowledge Base article Methods of Using Duo.
