To strengthen the security of Auburn University’s learning systems and protect sensitive academic data, multi-factor authentication (MFA) using DUO is now enabled in Canvas for users with access to grades, specifically those assigned the Teacher or Teaching Assistant (TA) role.
Undergraduate students should not be affected, but some graduate students who serve in instructional roles may be impacted.
A recent Canvas security audit recommended enabling two-factor authentication for faculty and others with grading access. DUO MFA is already required for many Auburn systems, including AU Access and Microsoft 365, and enabling it in Canvas aligns with existing security standards.
Multi-factor authentication is required for anyone who logs into Canvas with a Teacher or TA role beginning May 12th.
The MFA requirement only applies to the Teacher and TA roles within Canvas. If you have a Teacher or TA role in ANY course, you will need to authenticate with DUO. A complete list of roles is available online.
MFA WILL be required for the following Roles:
MFA will NOT be required for the following Roles:
Multi-Factor Authentication verifies your identity using something you know (your Auburn credentials) and something you have (a trusted device). Auburn University uses Duo Security for multi-factor authentication (MFA) to verify identity during login using a physical device. The physical device may be a smartphone or tablet using the Duo Mobile app, a text message to a cell phone, an automated voice call to a landline or cell phone, or a Duo hardware token. Users are encouraged to register at least two devices for backup. The Duo Mobile app is the recommended method for multi-factor authentication.
Q: Will I need to authenticate with DUO every time I log into Canvas during class?
A: You will be prompted for DUO when logging into Canvas, but not once logged in
Q: What if I do not want to use my phone in the classroom?
A: Faculty may use DUO on a tablet or laptop, or a DUO hardware token
Q: What happens if my phone battery dies or I forget my device?
A: Registering multiple devices or having a hardware token provides backup access
Q: Will this affect students during class?
A: Undergraduate students should not be affected. Graduate students with instructional roles may be prompted if they hold Teacher or TA roles.
